All the RightMoves…with stained glass

Surbiton continues to be a focus for my work and the most recent commission was something of a rush order. The brief was to deliver a domed top stained glass window unit matching in with a pair of existing small top lights in the front door and a main over light featuring the house number before the property featured on RightMove. The front door and top light were both fitted with clear glass and adding feature leaded windows would both improve security and add a splash of colour. I have recently acquired a large stock of original leaded units...

Original Solopark leaded glass going green with recycling.

Recently I have acquired a large stock of original leaded glass panels from local reclaimation company Solopark and we are going green with recycling these into fully refurbished stained glass windows to match original designs. Solopark have been specialists in reclaiming traditional building materials and supplies for many years and had built up an impressive array of stained glass. The Solopark stock includes a wide variety of styles from Victorian through to Art Deco and will offer you the chance to have original windows freshly...

Framed….Saffron Walden’s new stained glass window.

Framed….Saffron Walden’s new stained glass window.

Finally framed….Saffron Walden’s new stained glass window. Way back in February I measured up for a new feature window for a house in our local town which was in the middle of a major rebuild. After all sorts of weather related delays in the rebuild it was finally ready to receive the new leaded light last week. There was a shock in store on site when I found that the window frame I had measured to fit the window had been completely stripped out with just a hole remaining. As a result my carpentry skills were employed and with a...

Bullard & Sons original leaded window rebuilt

Bullard & Sons original leaded window rebuilt

Recently a rare Bullard & Sons original leaded sash window panel came into the workshop to be rebuilt. The panel was in a sorry state with the word ‘Stout’ almost completely lost. The entire window panel was rebuilt with new leadwork and replacement glass where the panes were cracked or lost. Once completed it has been mounted into a purpose built wooden frame allowing it to be mounted on a wall. The panel was almost certainly fitted within one of the Bullards public houses as a form of advertising. These were...

French Resistance – leaded glass window repair

French Resistance – leaded glass window repair to a leaded window which would not give in. Not everyone is aware quite how strong a leaded window is – certainly the would-be burglar in Bury St Edmunds had a surprise when he tried to gain entry through a french door in a house in the town – despite battering a hole in it they were unable to climb through. I was on site within three hours of the first call and working around the team from Suffolk Constabulary’s SOCO I secured the property using an interim plain glazing...

Radley panel on display in P & A Wood’s showroom

The Radley panel is now on display in the stunning location of P & A Wood’s showroom. The panel sits amongst some fabulous examples of the Rolls Royce and Bentley marques in the upstairs gallery at the Great Easton location (see main image). P & A Wood are heavily involved in this year’s Alpine event and will be providing the mechanical support to all the competitors whilst Paul Wood himself will be fielding the oldest car on the event - the 1908 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost called ‘The Silver Dawn’ Paul & Andrew...

Negative Feedback?! Fixing broken Ebay purchases

Negative Feedback?! Fixing broken Ebay purchases. Recently we had an enquiry from an ebay user who had successfully bid on these doors without actually seeing them. Whilst negative feedback warns others what our customer needed to do was find a way of fixing the broken purchase seemlessly.  They were located in a private house in Hampstead which was being refurbished and due to be stripped out. The listing was short and simply stated: Beautiful internal doors in silver chrome look frame with coloured glass panels and with one additional...

Leaded glass windows rebuild – St Denys, Bury St Edmunds

Leaded glass windows rebuild – St Denys, Bury St Edmunds. Recently I have been working at St Denys repairing some broken panes and rebuilding two window units which were collapsing. This image shows the new units back in place – I carefully removed them and salvaged all the original glass before rebuilding the windows with each pane identically placed – these should be good for another hundred years. As you can see using matching lead it is impossible to discern new from old – the rebuilt ones are in the lower line...

St Nicholas Church, Little Chishill – Stained glass restoration

St Nicholas Church, Little Chishill - a kick around with a football during a church barbeque had rather unfortunate results for this early window. Bringing everything back into shape required not just replacing the glass but also straightening and shortening the distorted lead cames. This task requires a good deal of patience as all the elements of the window are very delicate. Using matching handmade glass ensured that the result matches perfectly. ‘You have done an exceptional job, no one would ever know we had an accident’ –...
