Finally framed….Saffron Walden’s new stained glass window. Way back in February I measured up for a new feature window for a house in our local town which was in the middle of a major rebuild. After all sorts of weather related delays in the rebuild it was finally ready to receive the new leaded light last week.

There was a shock in store on site when I found that the window frame I had measured to fit the window had been completely stripped out with just a hole remaining. As a result my carpentry skills were employed and with a quick trip to the local building merchant for wooden beading a new frame was mitred up and fitted in short order. The feature window is now installed and throwing all sorts of subtle light shades into the hallway.

The mix of lightly obscured glass types gives goo dlight flow and also offers a high degree of privacy which you want with a porch.

Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town, in north west Essex. It has a rich heritage of old buildings reflecting its wealth as a rural market town. Further details on visiting can be found here

Recently a rare Bullard & Sons original leaded sash window panel came into the workshop to be rebuilt.

The panel was in a sorry state with the word ‘Stout’ almost completely lost. The entire window panel was rebuilt with new leadwork and replacement glass where the panes were cracked or lost. Once completed it has been mounted into a purpose built wooden frame allowing it to be mounted on a wall.

The panel was almost certainly fitted within one of the Bullards public houses as a form of advertising. These were used just in the same way as beer mats, bottles, and glasses to show brewery allegiance. The panel features a mix of ‘flashed’ red glass and a pearl white to form the lettering all then surrounded by a ‘cathedral’ type glass.

As a brewery Bullard and Sons were based in Norwich and started trading in 1837 before they were ultimately absorbed into the Watney Mann empire in 1963 with the original Bullards site ceasing brewing three years later. All the history of the Bullard brewery can all be found here: Bullard-and-sons

With the current popularity of all types of breweriana I can produce genuine reproductions using all the original materials - please enquire for details

Rebuilt panel installed on site

This original panel was discovered at a sale within a Norfolk steam fair in the late 1980′s and has been awaiting a full rebuild ever since. Once these were commonplace in every public house but now very rare to find in a salvageable condition.

Octane’s experienced editorial team draws on the skills of international personalities, motoring journalists, racing drivers, historians, automotive experts and photographers to create what is now described as being ‘the best classic car magazine in the world’.

French Resistance – leaded glass window repair to a leaded window which would not give in. Not everyone is aware quite how strong a leaded window is – certainly the would-be burglar in Bury St Edmunds had a surprise when he tried to gain entry through a french door in a house in the town – despite battering a hole in it they were unable to climb through.

I was on site within three hours of the first call and working around the team from Suffolk Constabulary’s SOCO I secured the property using an interim plain glazing solution.

The leaded window having put up such a strong fight was beyond salvage and a new unit will had to built to exactly match the original. The replacement will include hidden internal steel strips which will further reinforce the door.

Whilst it is possible to crack an individual pane with an errant stone from the lawn mower actually ripping a way through a leaded window is remarkably hard as the solder joints and lead came will readily flex repeatedly absorbing the force applied through it.

Hopefully the burglar has learned a lesson and will not take on another leaded window in the future!

Paul & Andrew Wood’s company was founded in 1967. The brothers left Rolls-Royce once Andrew had completed his engineering apprenticeship, to start their own business working exclusively with Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars from a workshop in Moreton, Essex. With Andrew in charge of the engineering element within the Company and Paul in charge of sales and coachwork, the business flourished to such an extent that by 1970 they had to move to larger premises in Great Bardfield.

As time passed, the business continued to expand, making it necessary for a second move in 1988 to even larger premises, this time to the village of Great Easton. Existing buildings on the site were modified and converted into Offices, Parts Department and Coachwork facility. Additionally a large new building was erected as an Engineering Workshop, specifically designed to cater for the repair and maintenance of Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars. More recently, a new but traditionally styled Showroom has been designed and purpose built on two levels to display Rolls-Royce and Bentley motor cars of all ages amd this where the Radley panel is displayed.

Negative Feedback?! Fixing broken Ebay purchases. Recently we had an enquiry from an ebay user who had successfully bid on these doors without actually seeing them. Whilst negative feedback warns others what our customer needed to do was find a way of fixing the broken purchase seemlessly.

They were located in a private house in Hampstead which was being refurbished and due to be stripped out. The listing was short and simply stated: Beautiful internal doors in silver chrome look frame with coloured glass panels and with one additional comment: Odd mark on frame as shown in picture.

However – if you look closely at the left hand door a significant part of the lower panel has been lost and replaced with clear glass including losing the lead came – this of course was not mentioned and was the reason for the call to me.

The doors are now back looking splendid after some sleuthing on glass types aided by my friends at Kansa Glass in Barnsley and ready to be fitted into their new home near Bury St Edmunds – and if you were wondering I can confirm with the steel framing they are incredibly heavy!

The panels were originally built by a London based glass studio which has now closed down and relocated – their signature is engraved in one corner of the panels.

The nature of stained glass means that different lighting conditions constantly change it’s character and reveal the details and textures in the glass, bringing it to life and creating a unique atmosphere wherever it is placed.

Talk to us about installing one of our large scale stained glass panels. There are many options to install and display including freestanding as well as traditional aperture installation (subject to survey).

This is the second large scale automotive project I have undertaken; the first featured a 1902 Panhard et Levassor and in the last year this has been well travelled having been exhibited at the headquarters of the Veteran Car Club, Cranfield’s History of Motorsport Conference and most recently at the Grand Hotel in Brighton for the Veteran Car Club’s London to Brighton Run dinner.

James Radley was the son of a wealthy colliery owner in Lancashire and it is believed he was born at Dunnow Hall at Slaidburn in 1884.
Radley was a close friend of Charles Rolls another aviator and who had been the first to complete a double-crossing of the English Channel
James Radley and business partner William Rhodes-Moorhouse, formed a company called the Portholme Aerodrome Limited in 1911 to design and build aircraft at St Johns Street, Huntingdon. The first locally designed and built aircraft flew from Portholme on 27 July 1911. A year later they were to sell the business to Handley Page but not before Portholme had built the body for Radley’s Ghost to his own design.

James Radley had privately entered a Silver Ghost for the 1912 Austrian Alpenfahrt however on the first day of the seven day Trial they were hampered by its three-speed gearbox and failed to negotiate a very steep sharp hairpin bend on the ascent of the Katschberg. Requiring to use reverse gear and needing help from its three passengers to restart this incurred so many penalty points that the crew retired.
He vowed to return with a modified Silver Ghost for the 1913 event and in fact he was joined by three other cars to form a factory team specially prepared for the event with four-speed gearboxes, an increase in compression ratio and a larger carburettor. The team gained six awards including the Archduke Leopold Cup. Radley’s car chassis 2260E won overall keeping a clean sheet and setting fastest times on each of the stages. This picture shows Radley’s Ghost with him at the wheel at the weigh-in in Vienna the day before the start of the 1913 Alpenfahrt on Saturday 21 June 1913. Rolls Royce man John ‘Tubby’ Ward, in cloth cap, is sitting in the rear who for the event acted as riding mechanic.
