Radley Ghost Stained Glass – Update

Time to update on the Radley Ghost stained glass panel which has been on display at the The Sir Henry Birkin Memorial Foundation headquarters in conjunction with the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club at Paulerspury near Silverstone as reported here The Foundation’s News has recently run an article on the panel which can be seen here:                   The RREC and HRMF building are a fabulous facility and host to many exhibits charting the products of Rolls Royce and Bentely over the period of the company. More details on the Hunt House can be...

Just in time for the Christmas break (in) – leaded glass restoration

Leaded glass restoration – just in time for the Christmas break one of my long term customers Bellerbys College in Cambridge suffered a pre-Christmas break in when an uninvited guest accessed the College through an upper floor leaded glass window. Bellerbys ongoing work can be seen here The opening window involved is the one to the left accessed from the roof:                 The window had been ‘jemmied’ in it’s entirety from the stone frame and as a result the leaded window and frame had to be removed to straighten and...

RREC headquarters receives Rolls Royce stained glass

RREC headquarters receives Rolls Royce stained glass – back in the Spring the Radley Ghost panel was on display at P & A Wood which was detailed in a previous post here  After that launch the panel went from Great Easton over to the Veteran Car Club’s headquarters in Ashwell to be part of the President’s Lunch display. Solopark stained glass arrives

Solopark stained glass arrives – as I wrote in a previous blog here I have obtained stained glass from the Solopark  group and this week I have another batch. Included was this interesting stained glass panel depicting a small blonde boy collecting windfall apples and apparently watched over the gate by his grandfather or possibly caught in the act of scrumping by the orchard owner! The sharp eyed amongst you will have noted the missing right hand corner where it has received a hard knock. I have the three shards of glass and when I strip the panel down I will aim to conserve the...

Stained glass birds roost once again in Surbiton.

I have worked on a whole series of properties in Victoria Avenue, Surbiton and the latest has seen a major revamp to the frontage. These windows feature original Victorian stained glass bird roundels The leaded windows fitted were quite simplistic and had been updated at some point but did feature some wonderful Victorian painted roundels of birds which it was important to build back into the new designs.  The front door featured three original Victorian leaded lights and we used this theme to drive the design. Colour choice was important and we were able to rely on the traditional English...

Sellotape works wonders holding stained glass…

One of the stained glass windows in this front door from Surbiton was badly in need of refreshing. The use of Sellotape holding panes in place always shows that problems have been building for some time. In this case some urgent action was required in order that the leaded window did not collapse entirely. The leaded units in front doors typically work hard with all the coming and going and the structure had begun to collapse with any number of  cracked and weakened joints despite the window being supported by external steel re-bars to which it was copper tied. The English Muffle glass...
