Proactive maintenance
In almost all cases the stained glass maintenance work I undertake is reactive – panes are cracked or the leaded window itself is loose or collapsing. Problems are compounded behind the scenes when water ingress leads to corrosion of window frames or internal damage and rectifying the results can be more involved than expected. Missing or loose fitting window catches are another issue where the mere fact that the window is not properly closed allows for problems to start. On 3rd July I was invited to display the Panhard stained glass panel by Cranfield University at their International Conference on the History of Motorsport Technology. The event was hosted by Sir Jackie Stewart and featured presentations from many important contributors some of whom had been directly responsible for step changes in motorsport including Mike Pilbeam and Peter Wright formerly of BRM and now with the FIA and in particular Brian O’Rourke from Williams F1. This car was built in Paris by René Panhard and Emile Levassor and was bought new by Sir Otto Beit the diamond merchant (whose brother Alfred was the main backer of Cecil Rhodes of Rhodesia) The car has been in the same family since 1967 and has competed in over forty London to Brighton Runs in that time.
