Framed….Saffron Walden’s new stained glass window.

Finally framed….Saffron Walden’s new stained glass window. Way back in February I measured up for a new feature window for a house in our local town which was in the middle of a major rebuild. After all sorts of weather related delays in the rebuild it was finally ready to receive the new leaded light last week. There was a shock in store on site when I found that the window frame I had measured to fit the window had been completely stripped out with just a hole remaining. As a result my carpentry skills were employed and with a quick trip to the local building merchant for...

Bullard & Sons original leaded window rebuilt

Recently a rare Bullard & Sons original leaded sash window panel came into the workshop to be rebuilt. The panel was in a sorry state with the word ‘Stout’ almost completely lost. The entire window panel was rebuilt with new leadwork and replacement glass where the panes were cracked or lost. Once completed it has been mounted into a purpose built wooden frame allowing it to be mounted on a wall. The panel was almost certainly fitted within one of the Bullards public houses as a form of advertising. These were used just in the same way as beer mats, bottles, and...

St Nicholas Church, Little Chishill – Stained glass restoration

St Nicholas Church, Little Chishill - a kick around with a football during a church barbeque had rather unfortunate results for this early window. Bringing everything back into shape required not just replacing the glass but also straightening and shortening the distorted lead cames. This task requires a good deal of patience as all the elements of the window are very delicate. Using matching handmade glass ensured that the result matches perfectly. ‘You have done an exceptional job, no one would ever know we had an accident’ – Peter Lyster  - Little Chishill Manor You can read...

St Swithun’s Church, Great Chishill stained glass restoration

Water dripping onto the front pew at St Swithun’s Church in Great Chishill made it was clear there was a problem with the high level windows . Clambering up onto the roof allowed an inspection which soon revealed a series of cracked and holed panes directly above the wet pew probably as a result of a bird strike. Once back on the ground I was able to point out to the Churchwardens the missing glass which of course lined up with the damp area.  Another company had inspected the same windows and declared all eight on the northern aspect were in need of full replacement at a cost of...

Panhard Stained Glass Panel on display for Cranfield University

On 3rd July I was invited to display the Panhard stained glass panel by Cranfield University at their International Conference on the History of Motorsport Technology. The event was hosted by Sir Jackie Stewart and featured presentations from many important contributors some of whom had been directly responsible for step changes in motorsport including Mike Pilbeam and Peter Wright formerly of BRM and now with the FIA and in particular Brian O’Rourke from Williams F1. Brian gave a fascinating presentation on the changes in safety across the last 25 years – his tenure of course spanning...
