Leaded light rebuild exposed

Montague Road in Cambridge has seen several leaded lights come to my workshop Here is the leaded light apart with the central portion still to be stripped Cracked glass needs to be matched and replaced – this is all caused by the distortion of the leaded panel. As the door slams shut the glass and lead have weight which gradually makes the panel creep – the further from the hinge the greater the force applied. I added some sponge draft excluder to the door surround to soften the closing. Client had this to say on completion: ‘All looks good and hopefully will last a good...

Tenant’s rebuild delight

Whitehill Road in Cambridge has a happy tenant with a newly rebuilt leaded light in the front door to welcome them. Door lights work hard and this one was on the point of collapse and has now been fully re-leaded with new came ready for the next 100 years The glass is a mix of unusual colours of ‘hammered’ glass type which was very popular for use in Art Deco styles The customer returned home to view the rebuild and commented:-  You did a fantastic job! – Payment done with many thanks. The house is just around the corner from the famous Abbey Stadium which is the current...

Attention seeking requires lead light repair

Attention seeking requires lead light repair since after all what better way than to use a thrown shoe? End of term required some celebration at Emmanuel College in Cambridge. Finding yourself locked out of your room in the University halls means you need the help of a fellow undergraduate. What better way to attract their attention than to throw a shoe at their window? I have repaired many leaded windows at Emmanuel College in the past and this is a simple repair. The lead came could be straightened and matching glass used to bring the window back into service. It is unusual for attention...

Old Woodbury House is located on Gamlingay Cinques with fantastic views out over the countryside and is part of Tetworth Estate – period pictures show how the house looked during the 1960′s The project was complex in that the window cames are formed by eight way folded zinc sheet which is soldered to form a distinct pattern. London architects Inskip and Jenkins...

Icknield Way Parishes expand using Ketton Stained Glass

The seven churches within the Parishes of the Icknield Way have recently expanded their work with Ketton Stained Glass as I took on repairs to two other village churches. I have previously worked at Great and Little Chishill detailed here and now I have undertaken similar conservation and repair work at Heydon and Elmdon focusing on damaged panes like this:   This latest phase of work was focused on preventing water ingress through holed panes including within the Elmdon Dial...
